October is National Financial Planning Month, so we thought now would be the perfect time to spotlight Joseph Trucano, our Director of Financial Planning. Joe is a Certified Financial Planner™ and has been with Oliver Luxxe since its inception in 2014. He works closely with high-net-worth individuals, families, and businesses to help them succeed by creating tailored financial plans that meet their unique needs.
Drawn to relationship-building in financial planning
Joe started his career working for larger institutions such as Bank of America, Merrill Lynch Wealth Management, where he got his first taste of advising clients and families of high net worth, and UBS before joining the firm. He learned that he was well-suited for wealth management and making the appropriate decisions and plans to achieve his clients’ success and that he enjoyed this line of work. Fortunately, his colleague at UBS at the time, Brad Jacobson, presented him with an opportunity to pursue and further deepen his wealth management career at Oliver Luxxe. Joe threw himself back into studying, passed his CFP® exam, and the rest is history.
The relationship-building aspect of his work drove Joe to become the firm’s trusted advisor in financial planning services. What is most interesting about his role, he says, is that it’s very dynamic – every issue and every individual is unique. He must pivot to create an appropriate strategy for each issue, individual, family, and business. Financial planning is also a broad topic, so his work involves designing strategic investment portfolios, retirement planning, social security analysis, estate planning strategies, and many more elements that add up to an elaborate puzzle piece that he gets to put together. He says the most rewarding part of his job is when the client sees and feels the tangible results of his planning and is satisfied to know they are in a better position than when they first started.
OLA and the future of financial planning
When asked why he enjoys working at Oliver Luxxe, Joe says that he loves that the firm is independent – “we are not beholden to some corporate mandate, and we strive to deliver something that’s in the best interest of our clients.” Furthermore, the firm is a fiduciary, which means its services are held to a higher standard, building more trust and allowing the team to do their jobs to the best of their ability. This frees the team up to be true advocates for our clients. “We have the ability to provide impactful solutions for them. And if we can’t do something, we have chosen the very best partners to help us.”
Joe also strives to position himself as one of the best financial advisors in his field. With the average advisor in their mid-to-late 50s these days and 38% set to retire within the next ten years, there will be a great demand for financial advice. Joe is setting up his practice to be a leader in this space for decades to come and to provide the multi-generational advice his clients need and want. Joe has his client’s best interests at heart, and he’s up for the challenge of leading throughout an ever-changing landscape and future.
Busy outside the office
Joe’s spare time is always eventful – you can usually find him running after his 4-year-old and 16-month-old that he shares with his wife. He is a baseball guy, so naturally, he is involved with his son’s tee ball team. He also loves to play golf, go out to great restaurants, see movies, and support his sports teams, the New York Mets and New York Jets.
